Moneyball

Moneyball is the best baseball movie since Angels in the Outfield, and the best sports movie since last year's Dolphin Best Picture winner The Fighter. Although if we're talking about team sports it's the best since, you guessed it, the 1994 classic Angels in the Outfield.
Neither movie ends with its team winning the World Series. While Angels has (expectedly) more of the Walt Disney happy ending sheen, neither film really projects that either team, the California Angels or the Oakland As, will continually repeat their success and become a dominant force in the league. For each of these teams it was a miracle to make the playoffs, the difference is one team uses angels and the other uses sabermetrics.
After a big playoff run, big teams with deep pockets lure away all of Oakland's star players. With a miniscule budget (relative to other teams' massive budgets) Oakland's general manager Billy Beane (played by Brad Pitt) attempts an experiment of building a team based entirely on stats (the most, perhaps only, important stat being how much a player gets on base) and seeking cheap players who fit the statistical profile.
It seems like a lot of people said Brad Pitt's performance in The Tree of Life was the best of his career but he does better work here. The entire film is centered around Beane and Pitt hits a nice note of subtlety throughout. It's the naturalism that's the key, of Pitt's performance and Bennett Miller's (Capote) direction of the movie. There are funny scenes sprinkled throughout but not enough to call it a comedy, there's plenty of extential tension but it never approaches melodrama and when the team has success there isn't that "inspiring true story" sentimentalism present in 80% of sports movies.
What I liked most about the movie was that it focused almost entirely on the business of baseball. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I can't think of another film where the front office and not the players are the stars of the show. It was interesting getting a peek into how player trades go down, what processes scouts use when recruiting players and the interaction between the owner, general manager and dugout manager.
I woulda sent the "relationship with the daughter" subplot down to the minors, but it's given minimal screen time so its not too big of a flaw. When I think about it the film doesn't really have many flaws yet I don't see this winning Best Picture; it's a well-made and well-told story but I don't anticipate it stirring up enough passion to win the big one at the Dolphins. Although sometimes it's the consensus picks that win out, and Moneyball seems like a movie that all the Dolphins could potentially get behind.
Beane says late in the movie that he wants to change the game. And he did, or at the very least influenced it. Though the end of the film is still somewhat tragic, as Colleen pointed out that even if everyone uses sabermetrics those with an advantage (i.e. lots and lots of money) still have it. The players all wear caps perhaps it's time that the salaries wear 'em too.

Colleen's Thoughts:

I was greatly anticpating the announcements of the Donnas this year. I know she has been on top of seeing everything and takes her nominating very seriously so I was excited to see which movies would come out on top. I guessed that Conviction would make a strong showing as mom loves incredible true stories (Although, they have to be good; they can't be the boring 127 hours variety).

I know she liked it but I was slightly surprised to see Animal Kingdom nominated for best picture. Another surprise was Natalie Portman getting a best picture nom. Her one word reveiw of the film to me after she saw it was, "Bad!" I'm guessing Joe may have had something to do with the Helena and Natalie noms as they weren't particularly strong performances but made appearances at the Joe's. I burst out laughing on a break from work, reading the Dolphins and had to try and contain myself when I saw the nom for "Evil Dude." Classic. I was also glad mom didn't seem to forget about movies, Easy A got a few noms and That Evening Sun picked up a cinematog nom.

All and all I am looking very forward to the announcement of the Donna's this year.

Drew's Thoughts:
EMBARRASSING! Noms for The King's Speech and Black Swan??? What are these, the goddam Oscars?!

(I mean this in a playful tone. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings hehe)

FYI, you will not be able to vote for Toy Story 3 in Best Original Screenplay at the Dolphins because it is based on material and characters previously produced or published (Toy Story and Toy Story 2)

Colleen's Thoughts:

I have to say, I was disappointed in the lack of noms for some amazing films, not to mention Carlos being not included. It was released in festivals as a film and judged that way at sun dance. Colin Firth? Helena? Natalie? Tom Hooper? Get King's speech and Black Swan out of there. Both painfully mediocre films. Hopefully they will not get noms at the Dolphins. Disappointed Trotsky didn't get proper respect. Hilarious creative film with some great acting.

Happy to see Fighter and Social Network got their proper due at the Joes. Also glad to see Rockwell made his much deserved appearance. I was a little surprised not to see any noms for previous Joe favorites the Duplass brothers and their film Cyrus.

Head nod to the Mike Leigh screenplay nom. I have a soft spot for that guy and I was happy to see that Joe saw the film. (Now he has kind of met our host family in London)

Drew's thoughts:
Colleen certainly delivered an interesting line-up as promised. Quite a few surprises in the acting categories, out of nowhere shots from Another Year and Get Low. Could Anton Corbijn be headed to a director nom for The American at the Dolphins? On Saturday I would have said no way but now, just maybe he will. Colleen had not forgotten The September Issue which was watched a year ago, she displayed her fashion roots proudly beating out other top contenders about war, social justice in Africa and environmental politics. It was strange how similar many of the categories were to the Drews. That Evening Sun was the one Drew Best Pic nominee that didn't translate it's success to that category in the Colleens though it managed Best Actor and Adapted Screenplay bids. I appreciate all the love for The Fighter, The Social Network, Carlos and The Trotsky. I am a bit surprised I Love You Phillip Morris failed to make it into the Adapted screenplay category. I guess I underestimated Colleen's love for The Town despite Jeremy Renner not showing his face even though it was hinted he would.
It's nice slate overall, and I am looking forward to the winners being announced! Could there be more surprises in store?

Colleen's Thoughts

As I mentioned in my comment some surprises here but the biggest surprise of all to me is how similar the Drews and Colleens ended up in some categories. We seemed to differ in opinion a fair amount of times this year and I was surprised that it didn't translate into our nominations that way. Perhaps the winners will make up for this.

I was happy to see 4 out of my 5 best picture noms in Drew's noms. Trotsky and Carlos should have got love at all the awards but I am at least glad they showed up here. No surprise about That Evening Sun. Drew adored that film. Also, no one should be surprised by the C. Reily nom as we all knew that was coming....more commentary to come

Exit Through the Gift Shop

Colleen's Thoughts:
When I first started to write my review for this documentary, I gave a long personal anecdote of my affinity for Banksy. That got far too long and I hadn't even gotten to the film so, instead, I'll stick to discussing Banksy's new doc, which is quite worthy of its own praise. If you want to know more about Banksy and I, just ask. Here goes the review:
I hesitate only slightly in exclaiming that I've been more impressed with the documentaries I've seen this year than with the narrative films. Having said that, Exit Through the Gift Shop lived up to its hype and will be a strong competitor for the best doc award at the 2010 Colleen's.
Thanks to Thierry Giuetta, our main subject, the film has amazing footage of street art in action and shows the entire thinking, creating, assembling, and displaying proccess. It also has awesome and rare footage of Banksy at work.
However, the film isn't merely segments of street art happening, it is a character study of Thierry Giuetta who claimed to be making a documentary of street art and then became the street "artist," MBW (Mr. Brainwash). The end product of this doc ends up being an intriguing look at the art world and what it means to be an artist. It's fascinating to mull over the differences between someone like Banksy and MBW. Truly a thought provoking film, and if you don't know street art and Banksy a great way to dive in head first.
